The Light Between Oceans

Novel Gathering

If you choose to host this gathering in the evening, a starry night invite would be appropriate.

If possible, arrange for you guests to meet at your local science centre or Observatory if your place of residence should have one.  Often, there is an evening set aside for stargazing.  What a great place to sit and look up at the sky and image you are on Janus Rock.

If hosting at home, create your own observatory.  Discount stores carry glow in the dark stars of varying sizes.  Purchase sticky tack, which is like plasticine, it will stick to paper and walls well without feeling sticky and there is no residue.  Create constellations on your ceiling.  If you want to go the extra mile, buy dark blue or black plastic table cloths and adhere the stars to these.  Then proceed to hang these around the room.  Purchase or borrow a black light which will enhance 'white' to glow in the dark.

Have small batches of fresh rosemary around your room.  See if you can get a few eucalyptus branches from your local florist.  You can give all your guests a small bouquet of these tied together with ribbon at each place setting or for them to take home.  Here, I simple snipped a piece of rosemary off and typed up a description of the herb, giving insight as to why Isabel planted these bushes by each cross.  When Tom is boarding the boat to head to Janus Rock for the first time Ralph asks if he would like them to save newspaper and Tom said to save the money, he would rather have books.  Stack some books around the room.  If you have some embroidery lie it on the tables, Gwen was always carrying hers around with her.  Think about hosting this event in a room with a piano if you are so lucky. Download sheet music of 'Three Blind Mice' and some from 'Bach'.  Strategically place mirrors around your room, to reflect light similar to the lighthouse.  Place maps, atlas', binoculars and a fountain pen on a table.  Voila you have created Lulu's lighthouse area.  Finally, hide a silver rattle where you know your guests will find it.  This will begin the conversation I think.
